Lyndon Ebker was a man dedicated to safety, even outside of his job with MODOT. We lost a good man; we lost someone who cared for others and always put them first. If you could have asked him why he did it, he would have told you:

"I do what needs to be done."

Lyndon Ebker -

Fallen Highway Worker

Lyndon D. Ebker was killed on April 7th, 2016. Sadly, it was caused by an 80 year old gentlemen who continued to drive while having impaired vision to both eyes. The following words are from an eyewitness account:

“It was fast, and it was unexpected. While my lane was moving forward, I saw a car coming way too fast, jerk into our lane from the opposite direction. I’m going to give you a quick replay of the sequential order of my thoughts. The entirety of it lasted maybe 5 seconds.

  1. Why did he ignore the “Slow/Stop” sign the MoDot worker was holding up?

  2. He’s going to smash the car in front of me.

  3. Why is his entire windshield destroyed?

  4. What is that large object flying through the air?

  5. He must’ve hit the sign, because that’s airborne too.

  6. There’s a helmet. On the ground. Why didn’t that helmet have a person?

  7. Okay, he swerved back into his lane before he could hit the people in front of me. That’s good.

  8. There’s a pair of jeans and boots hanging off the trailer hitch of the work truck. Why would they put those there?

  9. The large flying object is taking shape as my mind is catching up to my eyes.

  10. That was a man. Those are a man’s legs. Those boots belong to that man. Those jeans belong to that man. A man was the large flying object. That helmet belongs to that man…”
